Purple Hands (Dundee Hills AVA)

Ancient volcanic soils, including basalt pockets nearly 1,000 feet deep, define the Dundee Hills AVA, providing exceptional elevation and exposure for Pinot Noir, leading to wines with a shimmering crimson color and exceptional texture.

Purple Hands channels 15 million years of geological history into captivating wines that display their volcanic origins in every glass. From the heart of the Dundee Hills AVA, its vineyards lie atop deep reserves of basalt left by prehistoric lava flows. Known scientifically as Jory soil, this water retaining red earth leaves its mark on the wines’ fruit characteristics, in addition to spice and earthy qualities, plus a mix of sweet and savory notes.

A sub-zone of the Willamette Valley AVA, the Dundee Hills AVA experiences the same warm summers and mild winters as the surrounding valley—yet its elevation and soil composition are unique. The boundary of the AVA itself is the 200-foot contour line of the hills, which roughly defines where Jory soils give way to ancient marine deposits. The hillside elevations above this line play a significant role in shaping the wines of the Dundee Hills AVA, including Purple Hands’ vibrant Pinot Noirs and silken Chardonnays. The cooler temperatures and Jory soils yield wines driven by mineral notes, herbal undertones and just-picked fruit flavors.

From the heart of Purple Hands Haakon / Lenai Estate Vineyard, the geological history of the Dundee Hills makes itself known: The crumbly soils take on a visible red hue, and visitors can see the AVA boundary line simply by looking downhill.
