The Red Mountain AVA highlights the legacy of the great Missoula Floods, which left a trail of volcanic silt loams in their wake. These soils offer exceptional drainage, forcing the vines deep into the earth to seek nutrients and yielding structured, elegant wines as a result. Within the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains, the Red Mountain AVA is arid—minimal rainfall and abundant sunshine allow the grapes to develop concentrated colors in an environment with little disease pressure. Combined with consistent wind patterns that enhance tannic structure and dramatic overnight temperature shifts, the Red Mountain AVA is a unique appellation whose powerful climatic factors yield dynamic wines.
